Higher education in Germany

Germany has a long tradition of higher education. You can choose among universities, universities of applied scienes and colleges of art, music and film. The German university system is characterized by a rich variety, high quality and an exceptional reputation abroad. More than 350 institutions are located in modern vibrant cities, old historic towns or picturesque villages in the countryside. Their campuses range from small and welcoming to large and dynamic. Applicants simply need to find what suits them best. Plus: Germany's academic system is generally free of charge.

Holders of the Lebanese Baccalaureate need to pass an assessment test ("Feststellungsprüfung") before starting their student career in Germany if they fall short of 12 points. To prepare for the test, you need to attend a preparatory year at the "Studienkolleg" in Germany. Alternatively, successfully completed academic years at a Lebanese university serve as equivalence. Holders of the French or International Baccalaureate may directly apply to the university of their choice.

More than 900 international courses leading to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD levels) are offered by German universities. These courses are usually accompanied by additional German language courses.

Admission procedures vary with each university. You may directly turn to the university of your choice. For a network of several universities, student admission service is offered by uni-assist.

Master's Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance (PPGG)

Since 2009, the DAAD programme “Public Policy and Good Governance” (PPGG) is supporting future leaders from Africa, Latin-America, South-Asia, Southeast-Asia and the Middle-East who want to learn how to promote the principles of Good Governance in their home countries. The scholarship programme offers the chance to acquire a Master’s degree in programmes of particular relevance for the social, political and economic development in the students’ countries of origin.

Due to current developments in the Arab World, the DAAD wants to endorse the applications from the MENA-Region and therewith support the
democratic transformation process. The Section Civil Society and Cultural Dialogue awards 20 additional scholarships for applicants from MENA-countries for the next intake and extends therefore the application deadline to 30.9.2011.

Master's Programme Economic Change in the Arab Region (ECAR)

Arab countries are in different phases of economic development. However, many of them are struggling with organizing their economies during the process of transition. While elements of a market economy are sometimes implemented, this is often done on an ad hoc basis. This Master’s course aims to offer modern economic knowledge to the Arab region and contribute to establishing a functioning market economy. It is jointly offered by Philipps-Universität Marburg and University of Damascus (the deadline for submission of applications is 31.03.2011).

Intercultural Master’s Programme Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the MENA Region (REMENA)

Countries in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region face a change in energy policy due to the depleting resources of fossil fuels, the rising prices, and growing demand. Sustainable energy supply will remain the most crucial challenge of the Arab region for the coming decades and also a main focus in developing cooperation. Experience shows, there is a lack of energy experts being familiar not only with technological knowledge, but also with the culture, language and politics of both sides. This Master Programme provides young professionals with technical and managerial knowledge in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE) sector and with intercultural competencies. Both aspects are equally important when taking up leadership positions in the renewable energy sector and to work effectively in the the framework of international cooperation. This programme is jointly offered by the University of Kassel and the  Cairo University. The deadline for submission of applications is 15.02.2011.

B i-cultural Master’s Programme “Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)

Water resources, indispensable basis for development, food, and health, become ever scarcer and more polluted.

The concept of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) offers solutions to the water crisis in linking water to other vital resources and viewing the whole water cycle together with human interventions as the basis for sustainable water management. As it is a relatively new concept there is a high demand for experts adequately trained in the concept of IWRM. Next to the technical and managerial knowledge related to water resources these experts should also have knowledge of the practices of project funding and international cooperation.

For bilateral projects between Germany and Arab countries there is a need for experts being familiar with the culture, language and politics of both sides and are skilled in intercultural communication. The MSc »IWRM« has the objective to form such experts and to promote the concept of IWRM in the context of German-Arab cooperation. The deadline for submission of applications is 31.03.2011.
