Minister Müller visited Lebanon from March 18-19. He met with Palestinian refugees and community leaders in the Palestinian camp of Shatila in order to get a better understanding of their decades old plight. Moreover, Minister Müller met his Lebanese colleague Elie Abou Saab, Minister of Education.
Germany donated 34 million Euros for the schooling of Syrian refugee kids in the school year 2014/15. Müller met with Prime Minister Salam and Minister for Social Affairs Derbas with whom he discussed the situation in Lebanon and prospects for solutions of the conflicts in the neighboring countries. The Minister ensured the Lebanese cabinet members of the continued German support in coping with the refugee crisis, with focus on education and infrastructure support to municipalities which host refugees.
The delegation also went to the Bekaa Plain to see the difficult living conditions in tented refugee settlements in Bar Elias and a public school in Zahle which provides education for 400 Syrian kids in afternoon shifts. Minister Müller met mayors from the Rashaya district before continuing his trip Gaziantep in Turkey.
