German DAFI scholarship program celebrates 25th anniversaryEnlarge image (© UNHCR)
Since 1992 Deutsche Flüchtlingsinitiative Albert Einstein (DAFI), which is mainly financed by the German Federal Foreign Ministry, facilitates young refugees worldwide to get access to Higher Education and therefore to shape their future “through knowledge, not ignorance”, as a student put it yesterday.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of DAFI program, 315 students from Syria, currently enrolled at the Lebanese University threw a celebration ceremony on 6 June at LU Hadath Campus conference hall showing pictures and performing a touching theatre play.
Besides student representatives, main speakers were UNHCR Country Representative Mireille Girard and UNHCR Assistant Education Officer and DAFI coordinator Agatha Abi Aad as well as Dr. Jean Daoud, representing the President of the Lebanese University, Prof. Fouad Ayoub. Furthemore Mr. Rami Kassis, Project coordinator of the DAFI scholarship program, gave a speech on behalf of Terre des Hommes Italy. Among the guests were representatives of the Humanitarian Affairs and Economic Development section of the German Embassy, Raymond Tarabay and Christian Kirchen, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Country Director Bahar Sayyas, as well as First Secretary Federica Mazzotta from the Italian Embassy.
